RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Purple Eagles volleyball team (6-8, 3-2 MAAC) was defeated by Manhattan (1-7, 1-3 MAAC), 3-1 (25-14, 25-27, 18-25, 15-25), on Saturday afternoon.
Match Recap
First Set
- The Purple Eagles jumped out to a quick lead to open the set, going on a 4-0 run that included kills from Taylor Allen and Mary Redl and an ace from Amanda Darling.
- Two kills from Redl kept NU ahead by two, 6-4.
- Niagara scored five straight points, kicked off by a kill from Redl and capped by three consecutive kills from Cassie Seminoff, to extend its lead over the Jaspers, 11-5.
- Another kill from Seminoff and back-to-back aces from Casey Brown put Niagara ahead by eight points, 14-6.
- After allowing the Jaspers one point, NU went on another 5-0 run, including kills from Seminoff, Allen and Redl, to take a 12-point lead, 19-7.
- A kill from Laryssa Imbuzeiro and two more kills from Redl put Niagara ahead of Manhattan, 23-9.
- NU allowed the Jaspers just five more points and won the first set, 25-14.
Second Set
- The Jaspers score four straight points to open the second set, but Niagara answered with three points, including kills from Allen and Redl, to trail by just one, 4-3.
- Manhattan took a 14-7 lead over Niagara, but kills from Seminoff and Allen and an ace from Brown put the Purple Eagles down by just four points, 14-10.
- Trailing by seven, 20-13, Niagara went on a 5-0 run, including a kill from Lexi Bapst and two more kills from Redl, to cut the Jasper lead to two, 20-18.
- Down by just three points, 24-21, a kill from Seminoff and solo blocks from Bapst and Allen tied the score, 24-24.
- The Jaspers, however, allowed NU just one more point and won the set, 27-25, to tie the match at one set apiece.
Third Set
- The Purple Eagles opened the set on a 4-0 run, which included a kill and an ace from Seminoff.
- Niagara and Manhattan went back and forth, tying the score seven times, before the Jaspers began to pull away, going on a 4-0 run to take an 18-14 lead over NU.
- A kill from Kelly McArthur kept Niagara within three points of the lead, 18-15.
- Manhattan went on a 6-1 run to extend its lead, 24-16.
- A service error from the Jaspers and kill from Seminoff earned NU's final points of the set.
- Manhattan took set three, 25-18, to take a 2-1 match advantage.
Fourth Set
- A kill from Redl, a block by Imbuzeiro and Redl and multiple Manhattan errors gave the Purple Eagles an early 5-3 lead in the fourth set.
- The Purple Eagles and the Jaspers went back and forth, with kills from Imbuzeiro, Sarah Weiby and Jenna Vogen helping to tie the score three times.
- Trailing by two, 12-10, an attack error from Manhattan and an ace from Weiby tied things up, 12-12.
- The Jaspers, however, went on a 7-0 run to take the lead, 19-12.
- A kill from Weiby put Niagara down by just six points, 19-13.
- A 5-0 run from Manhattan extended its lead, 24-13.
- A kill from Bapst and a block by Allen and Bapst were the final points for Niagara as the Jaspers won the set, 25-15, and the match, 3-1.
Eagle's Eye On
- Redl and Seminoff both recorded double-doubles. Redl had 14 digs and a team-high 16 kills and Seminoff had 21 digs and 14 kills.
- Darling led the team in digs with 22.
- Allen had a team-best five total blocks and also added five kills.
- Brown led the team in assists with 19 and aces with three.
- McArthur added 14 assists for the Purple Eagles.
