NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles (8-10, 5-4 MAAC) defeated the defending MAAC Champions, Rider (9-10, 7-3 MAAC), 3-1 (25-13, 26-24, 20-25, 25-21), on Saturday.
Match Recap
First Set
- The Purple Eagles went on an 11-3 run, including two kills from Laryssa Imbuzeiro and kills from Jessica Streuer, Cassie Seminoff and Taylor Allen, to open the set.
- A kill from Imbuzeiro and a block from Imbuzeiro and Kelly McArthur gave NU a 10-point lead. 13-3.
- The Purple Eagles allowed Rider one point before three consecutive kills from Jaycie Roberts extended the Niagara lead, 16-4.
- Leading 17-6, two kills from Allen, one from Mary Redl and one from Seminoff, out Niagara up by 15, 21-6.
- The Purple Eagles dominated the remainder of the set, winning 25-13.
Second Set
- The Purple Eagles and the Broncs went back and forth in the second set and, trailing by four, 10-6, Niagara went on a 6-0 run, including two kills from Roberts and a block from Allen and McArthur, to take the lead, 12-10.
- The Broncs went on a 5-0 run to reclaim the lead, 15-12.
- Rider was in the lead, 21-19, but three straight points from the Purple Eagles, capped by a kill from Roberts and a block from McArthur and Imbuzeiro, put them back in the lead, 22-21.
- Niagara trailed by one, 24-23, but kills from Roberts and Allen and a block by Allen and Roberts won the set for the Purple Eagles, 26-24.
Third Set
- Niagara and the Broncs traded points, but Rider got ahead, 16-10.
- A kill from McArthur put the Purple Eagles within five points of the lead, 16-11.
- The Broncs scored three points to extend their lead to eight, 19-11, and soon were ahead, 22-14.
- An error on Rider, an ace from Roberts and a kill from Redl put Niagara back within five points of Rider, 22-17.
- The Broncs took a 23-17 lead, but a kill from Alllen and two from Redl put Niagara within three, 23-20.
- Rider, however, held on to win the third set, 25-20.
Fourth Set
- Niagara went on an early 8-0 run to take a 10-4 lead over the Broncs. The run included two kills from Redl and a block by Allen and Seminoff.
- The Broncs stayed within six points of the Purple Eagles, 19-13, but a kill from Allen put NU up by seven, 20-13.
- With NU leading by seven, 21-14, the Broncs scored five straight points to come within two points of the Purple Eagles, 21-19.
- A kill from Roberts put NU ahead by three, 23-20.
- The Purple Eagles allowed the Broncs just one more point as a kill from Imbuzeiro and an attack error from Rider earned the Purple Eagles the set and match wins.
Eagle's Eye On
- Roberts recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 16 digs and a team-high 15 kills.
- Redl also had a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs.
- Streuer recorded a double-double with 11 digs and a team-high 23 assists.
- Amanda Darling led the team in digs with 24. Seminoff added 17 digs.
- Allen had a team-high five total blocks. She also added 10 kills.
- McArthur had a career-high 16 assists.
- Imbuzeiro and McArthur each added four total blocks for the Purple Eagles.
