NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Niagara fell to nationally-ranked Robert Morris in overtime, 3-2, on Thursday.
Game Recap
1st Period
• Robert Morris opened the scoring Thursday evening as Matthew Guerra scored on a rebound for the Colonials 4:12 into the game.
• In the final minute of the period,
Eric Cooley tied the game for the Purple Eagles off a
Walker Sommer rebound.
• After allowing the early tally, starting goalie Mike Corson made 12 saves in the frame.
• Niagara killed two Robert Morris power plays in the opening stanza and went 0-for-1with the man advantage.
2nd Period
• Niagara took the 2-1 lead 3:15 into the second period when
Luke Edgerton buried his first goal of the season.
Chris Harpur and
Jared Brandt were credited with the assists on the play.
• Corson continued to stay strong in the second period as the junior made nine saves, which brought his game total to 21 through 40 minutes of action.
• Niagara had the momentum on its side in the second as it registered more shots (26-16), shots on goal (18-9) and faceoff wins (15-10).
3rd Period
• The Colonials would even the score 4:58 into the final period as Brendon Michaelian got one past Corson on a delayed penalty.
• Niagara would kill the penalty, improving to 3-for-3 on penalty kills for the game.
• At the end of regulation, the Purple Eagles and Colonials were knotted at 2-2. Robert Morris had a slight edge with 33 shots on goal, compared to 32 for Niagara.
OT
• Robert Morris won the opening faceoff to start the 3-on-3 overtime period.
• Michaelian scored the game-winner for RMU to give the Colonials a 3-2 overtime win.
Inside the Numbers
• Sommer extended his point streak to eight games with his assist in the first, while Brandt moved his streak to six games with his assist in the second period.
• Cooley's goal in the first period was his second goal on the season. The senior also recorded a season-high six shots.
• The Purple Eagles finished the contest 3-for-3 on penalty kills.
• Corson finished the game with 32 saves, reaching the 30-plus saves mark for the fourth time this season.
