Niagara University, NY -  Niagara and Air Force played to a 1-1 draw Monday night. Both teams earned a point in the standings, with the Purple Eagles taking the extra point after winning the shootout, 2-1.
 
1st Period
  • After one period of play, the game remained scoreless.
  • Niagara goalie Mike Corson stopped 14 Air Force shot attempts, while the Purple Eagle offense recorded just five shots on goal.
  • Both teams went 0-1 on the power play during the first 20 minutes of action.
  • Despite trailing in shots, Niagara won seven of the frames 12 face-offs.
 
2nd Period
  • Walker Sommer opened the scoring with a power play goal 6:51 into the period as he took the pass from Jared Brandt to put the Purple Eagles up 1-0. 
  • Niagara had two more power play opportunities in the frame but failed to convert on either, going 1-for-3 in the period.
  • Air Force would even the score in the final minute of the stanza as Brian Adams got one by Corson.
  • The Niagara goalie finished the 40 minutes of action with a total of 23 saves after stopping nine in the second.
 
3rd Period
  • Air Force controlled much of the final 20-minutes, recording 16 shots on goal, all of which were stopped by Corson to keep the game tied.
  • Niagara tallied just four shots on goal in the period, sending the game to overtime.
  • At the end of regulation, Air Force led in shots (65-35) and shots on goal (40-22), while Niagara controlled face-offs (34-30).
 
Overtime
  • There were nine shots on net in the extra frame, but neither team was able to beat the other team's goalie.
  • Brandon Stanley nearly won it for the Purple Eagles during the 3-on-3 overtime period. Stanley took the pass from Carter Randklev in front of the net, but his shot was off target.
 
Shootout
  • Jack Billings and Walker Sommer scored to give Niagara the shootout win and extra point.
  • Corson stopped three of the four shootout attempts he faced.
 
Game Notes
  • Today's game was the Purple Eagles third this season to go to a shootout.
  • With his assist in the second period Jared Brandt extended his point streak to six games. The St. Louis, Mo., native has two goals and four assists in that span.
  • Sommer now leads the team with five goals and eight points on the season.
  • Corson made a career-high 41 saves, surpassing his previous career-best of 33 he set at Clarkson on Dec. 29.
