PULLMAN, Wash. – The Purple Eagles were defeated by Washington State, 16-7, in the first game of a four-game series on Thursday.

Game Recap
  • The Cougars had a big first inning, scoring 12 runs, including a grand slam, to take an early lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • Niagara got on the board in the top of the third inning. An RBI single from Matt Zaremba and a two RBI single from Dawson Bailey cut Washington State's lead to nine, 12-3.
  • A solo homerun and an RBI single in the bottom of the third extended the Cougars' lead, 14-3.
  • In the top of the sixth, Cole Tucker singled through the left side, scoring Peter Battaglia to leave NU trailing by 10, 14-4.
  • Washington State tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to increase its lead, 16-4.
  • In the top of the ninth, Zaremba hit a lead-off homerun over the right field fence. With bases loaded, Benny Serrano was walked, scoring Spencer Marcus. Battaglia reached base on a fielder's choice and Bailey scored but it was not enough to overcome the Cougars' lead.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Battaglia, Tucker and Zaremba each had two hits. Zaremba's homerun was the first of his career.
  • Bailey and Zaremba led the team in RBIs with two each.
  • Marcus and Zaremba each scored two runs.
  • Bednarski took the loss on the mound. He gave up seven hits and three earned runs in 0.2 innings pitched.
