Serrano's Homer Earns Niagara Victory At Boise State

BOISE, Idaho – A two-run homerun from Benny Serrano in the top of the ninth inning helped lift the Purple Eagles over the Boise State Broncos, 13-10, on Monday.

Game Recap
  • Niagara's bats were hot as the Purple Eagles recorded a season-high 17 hits in their matchup with the Broncos.
  • The Purple Eagles got on the board in the second inning with an RBI triple from Mike Brisson. It was Brisson's first career triple.
  • In the top of the third, with two runners on base, Michael Gabriele reached base on a fielder's choice and Peter Battaglia scored on an error by the Broncos' second-baseman, extending Niagara's lead, 2-0.
  • Two RBI doubles from the Broncos in the bottom of the third frame tied the score at two runs apiece.
  • The Purple Eagles answered in the top of the fourth. Dawson Bailey singled to right field and advanced to second on a Bronco error, giving Marty Cole enough time to cross the plate. Another error by Boise State gave Cole O'Connor time to score, putting Niagara back on top, 4-2.
  • Boise State took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth, 5-4, after a two-RBI double and a score on a wild pitch.
  • The fifth inning was a productive one for the Purple Eagles as they scored five runs. RBI doubles from Cole, O'Connor and Battaglia and RBI singles from Brisson and Benny Serrano gave Niagara a 9-5 lead over the Broncos.
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Broncos once again tied the score, 9-9.
  • Niagara reclaimed the lead, 10-9, in the top of the eighth on an RBI double from Brisson, but the Broncos answered with an RBI double of their own in the bottom of the inning to knot the score, 10-10.
  • In the top of the ninth, Serrano homered to left center, sending the game-winning run across the plate. Cole Tucker scored on a wild pitch for Niagara's final run of the game.
  • Niagara held the Broncos off in the bottom of the ninth to earn the 13-10 win and snap a five-game skid.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Battaglia went 4-for-5 at the plate with one RBI and three runs scored.
  • Brisson recorded a career-high three hits (3-for-4) and three RBIs.
  • Serrano also drove in three runs.
  • Serrano, Bailey, Cole and Spencer Marcus each recorded two hits. Both of Cole's hits were doubles.
  • Zapata-Baez earned the win on the mound. He struck out one and allowed just one hit in 1.1 innings pitched.
  • Niagara did not commit any errors against the Broncos.
