NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – A blistering start and a suffocating finish were not enough to lift the Niagara men's hockey team to victory in the series finale against Holy Cross on Saturday night. Both teams combined for 22 shots on goal in the first period before the Purple Eagles took it to the Crusaders in the second half of the game, outshooting the visiting squad, 26-8, over the final 28:41 of regulation and the first overtime. Holy Cross, however, skated off with the bonus point after a one-round shootout win.
Game Recap
- The Purple Eagles registered five shots on goal in the opening three minutes. Cam Cook nearly capitalized on an Alex Truscott rebound, but Matt Radomsky made a good save by coming across the crease to somehow close off the open cage.
- Ben Sokay made it 1-0 Niagara almost halfway through the first period. Zac Herrmann led the charge into the Holy Cross defensive end, played the puck in below the goal, allowing Jack Billings to make a pass in front for Sokay, who rang the puck off the pipe and the cross bar before it crossed the goal line.
- Later in the first, Niagara was down a man on the penalty kill. The Purple Eagles forced a turnover and sent Brandon Stanley and Jack Billings on the attack with just one Crusader back. The two passed the puck back and forth, opening up the left side of the net, which allowed Stanley to bury the puck in the wide open cage.
- After Holy Cross tied the game, 2-2, in the second period, Sokay nearly tapped home a go-ahead power play marker with 50 seconds left in the frame. Sokay raced straight to the net and got his blade on Luke Edgerton's feed from the wing, but the puck skirted just wide of the goal.
Beyond The Boxscore
- Stanley's shorthanded tally was the team's first since Eric Cooley recorded one against Sacred Heart on February 8, 2019.
Up Next
- The Purple Eagles head west next weekend for a two-game set at longtime rival Air Force on January 17-18. Puck drop on Friday night will be at 9:05 p.m. Eastern Time.
