NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara University women's soccer team returned home after a three-game road swing to shut out the Houston Baptist Huskies, 1-0, at Niagara Field on Sunday.
SYNOPSIS
Playing at home for the first time since the season opener, the Purple Eagles and Huskies put on an attacking show for the fans. The first half featured end-to-end action with both teams having quality scoring chances. Both teams had shots hit the post – HBU in the 3
rd minute and NU in the 43
rd minute. However, Niagara managed to score on its shot that rattled the post with
Veda Hensel heading home the rebound in the 43
rd minute.
The Purple and White dominated play in the second half, outshooting the Huskies 10-5. Though, NU needed the post and a quick reaction save by
Sabrina Locas in the 80
th minute to keep HBU off the scoresheet.
MOMENTS
- 3' - HBU had the game's first scoring chance when Tayah Reynolds' shot hit the post and was followed by a saved by Sabrina Locas.
- 6' – Annie Ibey shot in the box sails wide of the post.
- 17' – Ibey again had a scoring chance narrowly miss.
- 24' – Ibey's shot forces a save near post.
- 43' (GOAL) – Bayley Sullivan's shot scrapes the crossbar and the rebound was headed home by Veda Hensel.
- 52' – Niagara almost scored its second when Djeynaba Thiam sent Kelsey Araujo through, but her shot was saved.
- 80' – HBU's Noor Abukishk shot strikes the post and the follow up shot by Catalina Elwonger was saved by Locas.
- 86 – Araujo's close range effort was saved near post.
EAGLE'S EYE ON…
- Veda Hensel provided the game-winning goal to find the back of the net for the second straight game.
- Annie Ibey had a game-high six shots.
- Sabrina Locas made five saves for her second shutout of the season.

- Niagara's 4-1-0 record is its best start to a season since 2008 (5-1-0).
- Niagara tied a season-high in shots with 18 and set a season-high in corner kicks with six.
