Volleyball Defeated By Youngstown State And Hartford

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Purple Eagles fell to Youngstown State, 3-1, and Hartford, 3-0, on the first day of the Cornell Invitational on Friday. 

Match Summary
First Set
  • Niagara and Youngstown State went back and forth to begin the first set with the lead changing five times before the Penguins went on a 6-0 run to get ahead of NU, 14-7.
  • Niagara answered with three straight points, including two kills from Caroline Leitch, to cut YSU's lead to three points, 14-11.
  • The Penguins, however, maintained the lead for the remainder of the set, never allowing the Purple Eagles to come within more than four points of the lead. YSU scored five straight points to close out the set and earn the 25-16 victory.
Second Set
  • Niagara opened the second set scoring three straight points to take the lead. NU and the Penguins went back and forth, tying the score three times before Niagara took back the advantage, 11-9.
  • The Purple Eagles extended their lead to four points, 14-10, thanks to a 3-0 run which included two kills from Leitch and one from Jaycie Roberts.
  • The Penguins answered with five straight points to take their first lead of the set, 15-14.
  • NU and YSU exchanged points, tying the score at 17-17. The Penguins, however, picked up momentum, scoring six straight points to take a 23-17 lead and went on to win the set, 25-20.
Third Set
  • NU started the third set strong, taking advantage of successful serving and YSU errors to take a 7-2 lead.
  • The Purple Eagles continued to dominate. Leading 11-8, NU went on a 4-0 run, including kills from Cameron Maris and Leitch and an ace from Emillie Wright, to extend its lead, 15-8.
  • The Penguins came within four points of the Purple Eagles, 20-16, but Niagara held strong, scoring four straight points to stay ahead, 24-16.
  • Niagara earned the 25-15 third set win and trailed the Penguins by just one, 2-1, going into the fourth set.
Fourth Set
  • The fourth set was once again a back and forth affair between the Purple Eagles and the Penguins early on. Youngstown State began to pull away, taking a 14-7 lead over NU.
  • The Penguins never let Niagara get more than five points away from the lead. YSU took the fourth set, 25-14, to win the match, 3-1.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Roberts recorded her second double-double of the season with 11 kills, which was tied for the team-high, and 16 digs.
  • Leitch and Mary Redl each added 11 kills.
  • Wright led the team in digs with 21, tying her career-high. Redl added 16 digs, just one short of her career-high.
  • Jessica Streuer recorded a team-high 28 assists.

Match Summary
First Set
  • The Hawks led early but the Purple Eagles battled back and trailed by only one point, 15-14, midway through the first set.
  • The Purple Eagles were able to keep within a few points of Hartford throughout the entire set and Niagara trailed by just three points, 23-20, late. The Hawks, however, scored two straight points to close out the first set and earn the win, 25-20.
Second Set
  • The second set started off with the Purple Eagles and the Hawks exchanging points before Hartford began to pull away, taking a 12-6 lead over NU.
  • The Purple Eagles scored six more points in the second set, including two kills from Leitch and kills from Redl, Molly Jandris and Grace Hetterscheidt.
  • Hartford took the second set, 25-12, to take the 2-0 lead in the match.
Third Set
  • The Hawks took the 10-6 lead early but three straight points from the Purple Eagles brought them within one point of Hartford, 10-9.
  • The Hawks took an 11-9 lead, but a Hartford error and a kill from Redl tied the score, 11-11.
  • The Purple Eagles and the Hawks tied the score three times before Niagara took a one-point lead, 15-14.
  • NU and Hartford tied the score two more times before the Hawks scored three consecutive points to reclaim the lead, 19-16.
  • Hartford remained in control for the remainder of the third set, winning the set 25-18 to sweep the match.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Redl led the Purple Eagles with eight kills. Leitch, Roberts and Hetterscheidt each added five.
  • Roberts had a team-high 10 digs.
  • Streuer led Niagara with 15 assists and Mirna Kovacevic added 10 assists.
