NU Falls To The Big Red In Final Match Of Cornell Invitational

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Purple Eagles fell to the Big Red, 3-0, in their final match of the Cornell Invitational on Saturday.

Match Summary
First Set
  • The Big Red led the Purple Eagles, 13-7, early in the first set. A kill from Mary Redl and a service ace from Emillie Wright brought NU back within four points of Cornell, 13-9.
  • Cornell went on a 7-0 run to extend its lead over the Purple Eagles, 20-9. Niagara answered with three straight points to cut the Big Red lead to eight points, 20-12, but Cornell maintained in control and took the first set, 25-15.
Second Set
  • The second set was a battle between the Purple Eagles and the Big Red, with the lead changing nine times over the course of the set.
  • A 3-0 run from NU early on put the Purple Eagles in the lead, 9-8. Cornell then claimed the lead, 10-9, but a kill from Christina Cowsert tied the score, 10-10, and a kills from Redl put NU back on top, 11-10.
  • The teams exchanged points and Niagara was within one point of the Big Red, 19-18, late in the set, but Cornell began to pull away, scoring three consecutive points to get ahead, 22-18.
  • A kill from Redl brought Niagara back within three points, 22-19, but the Big Red scored three straight points to close out the set and take a 2-0 match lead.
Third Set
  • The Big Red took an early 10-4 lead over the Purple Eagles and never looked back.
  • A kill from Caroline Leitch brought Niagara within four points of the lead, 12-8, but Cornell scored six straight points to take a 10-point lead, 18-8.
  • Niagara scored four more points in the set, but Cornell earned the 25-12 set three win to sweep the match.

  • The Purple Eagles head to San Antonio, Texas to competing in the Cardinal Classic, hosted by University of the Incarnate Word. NU will face Delaware and Northern Illinois on Friday, Sept. 13 before taking on Incarnate Word on Saturday, Sept. 14.
