Purple Eagles Sweep Grambling State, Fall To Stetson

BOCA RATON, Fla. – After falling to Stetson, 3-0, in their first match of the FAU Invitational on Friday, the Purple Eagles bounced back for a dominant 3-0 sweep of the Grambling State Tigers.

Match Summary
First Set
  • The Hatters took the early lead in set one, getting ahead of the Purple Eagles, 6-2.
  • After a kill from Mirna Kovacevic and an error by the Hatters, NU was within two points of Stetson, 7-5.
  • The Hatters maintained the lead, scoring four straight points to take a nine-point lead over NU, 16-7.
  • Niagara went on a 3-0 run late in the set to trail by just seven points, 23-16, but Stetson won the first set, 25-17.
Second Set
  • The Purple Eagles and the Hatters went back and forth to start the second set and were quickly tied, 9-9. The Hatters, however, scored five straight points to get ahead of NU, 14-9.
  • The Hatters dominated the remainder of the set, allowing the Purple Eagles to score only five more points. Stetson won the second set, 25-14, to take a 2-0 match lead.
Third Set
  • Stetson took a 10-3 lead over the Purple Eagles in the third set, but NU battled back, scoring eight straight points to claim the lead, 11-10. Niagara's 8-0 run included four kills from Jaycie Roberts and two from Mary Redl.
  • The Purple Eagles and the Hatters exchanged points and tied the score three times before Stetson went on a 6-0 run to reclaim the lead, 19-13.
  • Niagara came back within five points of the Hatters, 21-16, but Stetson scored four straight points to win the set, 25-16, and sweep the match.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Roberts recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 kills, which was a team-high, and 11 digs. She also led the team in points with 11.0.
  • Emillie Wright led the Purple Eagles in digs with 17.
  • Jessica Streuer and Kovacevic each recorded a team-best 10 assists.
  • Redl recorded eight kills and one service ace.
  • Cameron Maris recorded one solo block and Maris, Jada Carrol and Grace Hetterscheidt each had two block assists.

Match Summary
First Set
  • The Purple Eagles and the Tigers went back and forth to begin the first set, but Niagara went on a 4-0 run to begin to pull away, 14-10.
  • Niagara remained in the lead for the remainder of the set, with the winning point coming on a service ace from Kovacevic. The Purple Eagles took the first set by a score of 25-19.
Second Set
  • The Purple Eagles scored seven straight points early in the second set, including two more aces from Kovacevic, to take a 9-4 lead over the Tigers.
  • NU allowed Grambling State one point before going on a six-point run, including two kills from Caroline Leitch and one from Carrol, to take a 10-point lead, 15-5.
  • The Tigers came within seven points of the Purple Eagles, 16-9, but Niagara answered with another run, scoring five points in a row to maintain a comfortable lead, 21-9.
  • The Purple Eagles allowed the Tigers only three more points and earned the 25-12 set two victory to get ahead in the match, 2-0.
Third Set
  • Grambling State took an early 5-3 lead over the Purple Eagles to begin the third set, but Niagara quickly regrouped and took a quick 8-7 lead.
  • The Tigers got ahead once again, 10-8, but kills from Hetterscheidt and Hannah Berry tied the score, 10-10.
  • The Purple Eagles and the Tigers continued to trade points and the lead, but Niagara finally began to pull away. Four straight aces from Roberts and kills from Berry and Redl gave Niagara its largest lead of the set, 21-15.
  • The Tigers scored one more point, but the Purple Eagles closed out the set on a 4-0 run to win the third set, 25-16, and come away with the 3-0 sweep for their first victory of the 2019 season.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Roberts recorded a career-high five service aces. Kovacevic's three service aces were also a career-high.
  • Leitch led the Purple Eagles in kills with 10.
  • Streuer led the team in assists with 24, while Kovacevic added 13 assists.
  • Redl recorded a team-high 10 digs and also added eight kills.
  • Maris had a team-high four block assists.

  • Niagara's Saturday match with Florida Atlantic has been cancelled due to the threat of Hurricane Dorian in the Boca Raton area.
  • The Purple Eagles compete next in the Cornell Invitational. They will face Youngstown State and Hartford on Friday, Sept. 6 and Cornell on Saturday, Sept. 7.
