Purple Eagles Fall To Canisius In Final Game Of 2019 Season

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles were defeated by Canisius, 10-4, in the final game of the 2019 season on Friday. Prior to the start of the game, Niagara honored its graduating seniors; Tyler Howard, Brett Cook, Jackson Jones and Jordan Parranto.

Game Recap
  • The Purple Eagles took the early lead in the bottom of the second inning. Darian Blanks doubled to left field, scoring Joseph Tevlin for the first run of the game, then RBI singles from Marty Cole and Peter Battaglia gave Niagara the 3-0 advantage over the Griffs.
  • Canisius scored once in the top of the third, but Niagara maintained the lead, 3-1. A two-RBI single from the Griffs in the top of the sixth, however, tied things up, 3-3.
  • In the top of the seventh, a two-run inside-the-park homerun from the Griffs gave them their first lead of the game, 5-3. They added four more runs in the eighth to extend their lead, 9-3.
  • A sacrifice fly from Tevlin in the bottom of the eighth sent Battaglia home and left Niagara trailing by just five runs, 9-4, but the Purple Eagles could not overcome the Canisius lead, falling to the Griffs 10-4 to drop the Battle of the Bridge series.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Dawson Bailey, Benny Serrano and Tevlin each had a team-best two hits. Both of Tevlin's hits were doubles.
  • Battaglia, Blanks, Cole and Tevlin each had one RBI.
  • Matthew Brash started on the mound, fanning nine and allowing just two earned runs and three hits in 6.0 innings pitched.
  • Alex MacKinnon (2-1) took the loss, striking out one and allowing two earned runs in 1.0 innings pitched.
