Canisius Tops Niagara In Tightly-Contested Showdown

 
NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The playoff hopes for the Niagara women's lacrosse team took a tumble in a 12-11 setback against Canisius on Wednesday evening. Caroline Crump and Shea Swartwout each recorded hat tricks in the effort.
 
Game Recap
  • Six minutes into the game, Swartwout connected for the opening strike to put Niagara ahead, 1-0.
  • Swartwout made it a 2-1 game just two minutes later when Hailey D'Hont set her up for her 20th goal of the year.
  • D'Hont netted a goal of her own with 17:34 left in the first half, drawing the Purple Eagles to within 4-3.
  • The Purple Eagles closed out the first half with six unanswered goals. Crump and Alexis Morales exchanged goals over an 11-minute span to turn a 5-4 deficit into a 7-5 advantage.
  • Jenna Brill made it 8-5 with 3:13 left before the half on a goal assisted by Swartwout.
  • Crump's third goal in less than 15 minutes made the score 9-5 at halftime.
  • Swartwout opened the second half with a free position goal that put the Purple Eagles up by five.
  • Canisius drew level at 10-10 before Rachel MacCheyne's first goal of the contest restored the Niagara lead.

Defensive Spotlight
  • Alexandra Leo picked up seven ground balls and also caused one turnover.
  • Mara Hathaway recorded two ground balls and three caused turnovers.
 
Coach's Corner
  • Head coach Wendy Stone: "Tonight was a battle -- we fought but came up a little short. We will work to be better when we face Manhattan on Saturday to honor our seniors."
