Women's Lacrosse Misses Playoffs On Rainy Senior Day

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – On a day honoring the outgoing class of 2019, it was that class of athletes that played the biggest part in a narrow, 7-6 overtime loss. The senior class scored all six Niagara goals, with Rachel MacCheyne netting a hat trick. The result, however, left the team out of the MAAC postseason tournament, with the Purple Eagles finishing the regular season in seventh place.

Game Recap
  • After Niagara won the opening draw, Caroline Crump put the Purple Eagles up, 1-0, with the shot clock ticking under 10 seconds. Crump laced an ankle-high shot on net and watched it trickle past the goalkeeper for her 42nd goal of the season.
  • Niagara went up 2-0 on another goal by Crump just four minutes in.
  • MacCheyne tied her own single-season goals record with 13:51 gone in the first half by blowing a shot past the keeper on a nifty feed from Crump.
  • MacCheyne snapped a 28-minute scoreless drought for the Purple Eagles by knotting things up at 4-4 as the game neared the midway point of the second half.
  • Hailey D'Hont got Niagara back to within one at 6-5 by converting a free position goal with 2:40 remaining in regulation.
  • With eight seconds left before the end of the half, Niagara carried the ball into the Jaspers zone needing an equalizer. Shea Swartwout fed MacCheyne at the goal mouth, where MacCheyne looped a shot around the goalie's left side to extend the game.

Milestones Met
  • MacCheyne's second goal of the day broke her own program single-season goals record (60).

Coach's Corner
  • Head coach Wendy Stone: "This group of seniors has changed the face and trajectory of this program. From the moment they stepped onto campus, they made their presence known. They are a class that as a whole has grown tremendously as not only players and teammates but as students, friends, and incredible young women. It has been a pleasure watching them, supporting them laughing with, pushing them and loving them for the past four years. To say it has been rewarding and exciting would be an understatement; we are incredibly proud of Alina, Bailey, Amy, Kenzie, Alexis, Hailey, Caroline, and Rachel, and beyond thankful to call you ours.

"To our seniors, Thank you for saying yes to us, and allowing us—your coaches, teammates, parents and friends—to come along for the ride."
