Total Team Effort Leads To Rout Of Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Niagara women's lacrosse team got a major boost in its effort to secure a playoff spot in an 18-9 takedown of Iona on Saturday afternoon. 10 different players contributed goals, while three Niagara goalkeepers combined to make 14 saves on 23 shots.

Game Recap
  • Caroline Crump won the opening draw, setting up Niagara's first offensive opportunity, which saw Rachel MacCheyne capitalize to put the Purple Eagles up, 1-0, just 52 seconds into the game.
  • A free position goal by Jenna Brill five minutes later doubled the Niagara lead.
  • After Iona got on the board, Mackenzie Molodetz and Alexis Morales combined for three goals in three minutes to get the team up, 5-1.
  • The Purple Eagles reeled off four unanswered goals to keep the Gaels at arms' length at the half after they closed the gap to 5-4.
  • Five minutes into the second half, Morales scored again to get Niagara into double digits with a 10-4 lead.
  • Alex Leo tallied seven minutes into the half for her 11th goal of the season and the team's 11th goal of the contest.
  • The Purple Eagles struck five straight times in five minutes to pull away from Iona and get the clock to run with a 10-goal, 16-6 advantage.
  • Allison McCormick tickled the twine for the first time this season with exactly 4:00 remaining in regulation.
  • Brenna Duffy got her second of the year with 19 seconds to play to set the score at 18-9.

Coach's Corner
  • Head coach Wendy Stone: "Today was a total team effort. Everyone contributed, and we came together as a group to get the job done."

Milestones Met
  • Needing two more draw controls to break the Niagara career record, MacCheyne came away with six, giving her 301 for her career. That surpasses Alexandra Higgins' ('18) career mark of 296 and makes her the first Purple Eagle to ever record 300 draw controls in her career.
  • Morales moved into sole possession of ninth-place all-time by passing Ashley Baker's 125 career 125 points. Morales now has 127 points (110 G, 17 A) in 70 career games.

Up Next
  • The Battle of the Bridge heads south, with Canisius hosting the Purple Eagles in a huge, midweek clash. Opening draw from Demske Sports Complex is slated for 7 p.m.
