Softball Drops Two Close Games

HONOLULU – The Niagara University softball team fell in both games during its second day of play at the Outrigger Resorts Hawai'i Spring Fling Tournament. The Purple Eagles lost an extra-innings affair to longtime nemesis Saint Bonaventure, 2-1, before Hawai'i topped them, 3-0, in game two.

Saint Bonaventure 2, Niagara 1 (8 innings)
  • Niagara threatened to break the game open in the second inning when Rachel Funk doubled to left field with one out. Maria Gabriele followed with a single to advance Funk and put runners on the corners before both were stranded.
  • Jennifer Szilagyi got the start in the circle for the Purple Eagles and spun 3.0 scoreless innings, yielding just one hit and three walks to 14 Bonnies batters.
  • Sierra Bertrand was brought in to relieve Szilagyi at the start of the fourth and retired the side in order to bring Niagara's bats back up.
  • Saint Bonaventure got baserunners to third in the top of both the sixth and seventh innings, but neither opportunity amounted to much as Bertrand and the defense eked their way out of the jams.
  • Funk went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Purple Eagles. Kelsey Harrigan, Jerri Orfano, and Maria Gabriele each accounted for one hit apiece.
  • Szilagyi, Bertrand, and Emily Johnston combined for five strikeouts and yielded six hits and seven walks.

Hawai'i 3, Niagara 0
  • Karsen Cotton got the nod in game two for Niagara and pitched four shutdown innings that saw just one Rainbow Wahine baserunner. Hawai'i finally cracked the scoreboard in the fifth, where Cotton was relieved to bring in Jenna Patterson for her first appearance in the purple and white.
  • Harrigan and Tara Driver each recorded a hit for the offense.
  • Cotton earned five strikeouts in her 4.1 innings, while Patterson's 1.2 in relief saw her give up one hit, one walk while fanning one.

On Deck
  • The Purple Eagles will play twice tomorrow, with their first game against Utah set to start at 5 p.m. ET. After a two-game break, they will return to Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium for a rematch with host Hawai'i at 9 p.m. ET.
