Softball Continues Play At Spring Fling Tourney

HONOLULU – The Niagara University softball team continued play at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa on Saturday with its third double bill of the tournament. The Purple Eagles fell to Utah in the early game, then dropped the late game to the host Rainbow Wahine.

Niagara 1, Utah 10 (5 innings)
  • Kelsey Harrigan led off the contest with a single up the left side. She moved to second on a hit by Jerri Orfano and took third when Rachel Funk was walked. Unfortunately for the Purple Eagles, the Utes recorded the third out before Harrigan could make it in.
  • After Utah tagged Niagara for nine runs between the third and fourth innings, Niagara got on the board when Bella Garone scored on a bases-loaded walk.
  • Harrigan's two hits led all Niagara batters, while Orfano and Kayla Raymond each secured one hit. Watkins had the lone RBI for the Purple Eagles.
  • Karsen Cotton opened the game in the circle for Niagara, tossing 2.1 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits and three walks. In relief, Jenna Patterson pitched 1.2 innings of six-run ball.

Niagara 0, Hawai'i 3
  • The Purple Eagles put themselves in position to cut into Hawai'i's 2-0 lead in the top of the third following a Maggie Vesneske leadoff walk. Vesneske reached second when Veronica Zimmerman was safe at first on a fielding error. Both advanced when Harrigan laid down a sac bunt, but neither made it home before the third out.
  • Harrigan was hit by a pitch to lead off the fifth inning, then moved to third on a Watkins double, but was ultimately left on base with Niagara down, 3-0.
  • Watkins' double proved to be the lone hit amassed by the Niagara offense, with Watkins and Vesneske also getting aboard via walks.
  • Sierra Bertrand was in the circle for 6.0 innings, dealing six strikeouts and allowing five hits and three runs.

On Deck
  • The final day of Hawai'i's Spring Fling Tournament will see Niagara hit the field just once when they match up with Utah at 6 p.m. ET.
