After opening its season at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, the Niagara softball team will remain there for another week's worth of action. The Purple Eagles will play six games over the next four days before returning to the Empire State.
Niagara Notes (0-7, 0-0 MAAC)
- In their first week of play, the Purple Eagles went 0-7, including four close games with Saint Bonaventure and the host Rainbow Wahine.
- Jerri Orfano finished the tournament with the highest qualifying batting average (.238) on the team. In 21 at-bats, she recorded five hits and a squad-best two RBI.
- The team's pitching staff combined for an ERA of 7.07 in their first seven games. Sierra Bertrand made two starts and another relief appearance, striking out 16 in 17.2 innings of work with a 3.57 ERA of her own. In two relief appearances, Emily Johnston only allowed one unearned run, keeping her ERA at 0.00 in 4.2 innings of work.
Scouting The Cougars (16-6, 0-0 OVC)
- Like Niagara, SIUE also participated in the Spring Fling Tournament last weekend. The Cougars went 2-2 in their four games in Mānoa, defeating Utah, splitting with Hawai'i, and dropping their lone meeting with Cal.
- With a .488 batting average, Alyssa Heren leads the Cougars at the plate. She also has nine extra-base hits and is tied for second on the team with seven RBI.
- Alana Cobb-Adams is a perfect 7-for-7 stealing bases this season.
- Emily Ingles has a team-high four wins and has thrown 35.2 innings in seven games. She has held opposing batters to a .237 average this season.
- SIUE and Niagara have never met on the softball diamond before this weekend.
Scouting The Rainbow Wahine (16-6, 0-0 Big West)
- Hawai'i went 4-2 last weekend, improving to 13-5 at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium in 2019.
- Callee Heen has knocked in 25 RBI in 22 games, a team-best. Her eight home runs rank tied for 13th in the country and has helped her post a slugging percentage of .860.
- Brittany Hitchcock has started 12 of the Rainbow Wahine's 22 games and has earned a 2.55 ERA and fanned 61 batters while walking just 11.
- Hawaii now owns a 3-0 all-time record over the Purple Eagles. Last week, the Rainbow Wahine won two 3-0 decisions against Niagara.
Scouting The Crimson Tide (25-0, 3-0 SEC)
- Alabama went 36-20 last season and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. This year, the Tide are coming to Hawai'i unbeaten at 25-0 and have earned the No. 4 ranking in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches poll.
- Kaylee Tow owns the best batting average on Alabama's roster (.393) and the second-best slugging percentage (.721).
- Montana Fouts' 0.74 ERA in 66.0 innings is the 11th-best average in the country. With 11 appearances, 10 starts, and a save under her belt, the freshman has racked up 83 strikeouts while holding opposing batters to a combined average of .149.
