Purple Eagles Fall To Utah Despite Late Push

PROVO, Utah – Despite a strong ninth inning, the Purple Eagles fell to the Utah Utes, 10-6, on Monday.

Game Recap
  • The Purple Eagles got on the board first with an RBI double from Michael Gabriele in the top of the third inning. Utah tied the score, 1-1, in the bottom of the inning.
  • The Utes took the lead, 2-1, in the fourth inning, taking advantage of an NU fielding error. By the end of the seventh frame, Utah had extended its lead over the Purple Eagles, 8-1.
  • With bases loaded for Niagara in the top of the eighth, Marty Cole reached base on an error by the Utes' first baseman, advancing all runners and scoring Gabriele to cut Utah's lead, 8-2.
  • A two RBI single from the Utes in the bottom of the eighth, however, kept them comfortably in the lead, 10-2, heading into the ninth inning.
  • In the top of the ninth, with bases once again loaded for NU, an RBI single from Gabriele added a run for the Purple Eagles. Joey Battaglia was then hut by a pitch, which sent another run across the plate. A two RBI double from Cole scored Peter Battaglia and Gabriele and cut Utah's lead to four, 10-6, with two outs on the board. A fly out from NU, however, brought the game to a close.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • The Purple Eagles scored a season-high six runs as well as recording a season-best 13 hits.
  • Gabriele led the Purple Eagles with a season-high four hits. He also added two RBIs, two runs scored and had one double.
  • Cole recorded a career-high three RBIs.
  • Benny Serrano and Peter Battaglia each had two hits and Dawson Bailey scored two runs.
  • Tyler Howard (1-3) fanned five and allowed six earned runs in 6.0 innings pitched.

  • The Purple Eagles take on Utah Valley tonight (March 11) at 8:00 p.m. ET. Niagara will take on both BYU and Utah Valley on Tuesday, March 12. NU will play at BYU at 2:00 p.m. ET and at Utah Valley at 8:00 p.m. ET.
