Game Summary
Sunday's contest between Niagara and Fairfield was a close contest from beginning to end, featuring five ties and 10 lead changes, and with neither team leading by more than eight points. The Stags built an eight-point lead early in the second half before the "Dom Duo" –
Dominic Robb and
Dominik Fragala – ignited the Purple and White to the win.
Fairfield started the second half in control, to the tune of an 11-4 run, before leading 51-43 with 13 minutes remaining. Facing their largest deficit of the game, the Purple Eagles went on an 8-0 run to tie the score at 51-51. Trailing 59-55 with seven minutes left, 59-55, Fragala entered the game for the first time and made an immediate impact. Fragala, who dropped a career-high 20 points earlier this season at Fairfield, went on a 10-0 run by himself to propel the Purple Eagles ahead, 65-59. Fairfield cut Niagara's lead to 69-67 with 2:46 left, but freshman
Raheem Solomon answered with a corner 3-pointer on Niagara's next possession as the Purple Eagles increased their lead to eight points in the final seconds.
The Purple Eagles came out of the gate strong, jumping out to a 12-5 lead within the first four minutes of the half. Despite Niagara's strong shooting, including 4-for-6 from three-point range, Fairfield stayed in the game. Down by eight points, Fairfield went on a 9-0 run to go in front for the first time with under nine minutes to go in the opening half, 22-21. Tied at 25-25, a 5-0 run by
Chris Barton pushed the Purple Eagles back in front, 30-25. The Stags bounced back to retake the lead twice before a Robb free throw tied the game at 37-37 as the game went into halftime.
