Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Sacred Heart Stymies Purple Eagles

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Sacred Heart Pioneers beat the Niagara men's hockey team, 4-0, in the team's home opener on Friday evening. The Purple Eagles got 28 saves from Brian Wilson in his second start of the season.

Game Recap
  • Niagara went on the penalty kill just seven minutes into the contest. Wilson made four saves on the kill before Jack Billings put a shot on Sacred Heart's net just as the penalty expired.
  • Seven minutes into the second period, Niagara found itself with a man advantage. Ludwig Stenlund was given a great feed from behind the net, bided his time, and took a great shot that was turned aside after an athletic, sprawling save from the Pioneers' netminder.
  • On the same power play, Scott Persson was able to rip a puck past the goaltender, only to have it bounce off the right post and out, where the keeper spun and fell on it for a faceoff.
  • Early in the third, the Purple Eagles kept pressure on the Pioneers with shots from Persson and Cam Cook that were swallowed up.

Coach's Corner
  • Head coach Jason Lammers: "It's tough to get shut out in your own building, so that's on us. Defensively, we were okay. Special teams, we have to get better on the [penalty kill]."
  • On the first power play chance for Niagara: "I liked that first power play. Going into the third period we felt like maybe the game should've been 2-1. Like I said, we did everything but get it past."
  • "23 shots isn't good enough. But that's not who we are and I bet you we'll be better tomorrow."

Up Next
  • The Purple Eagles close out the series with Sacred Heart tomorrow afternoon at 4:05 p.m. Tickets are still available, and include access to the postgame open skate session. Head coach Jason Lammers will also be available to take questions or comments in his postgame press conference.
