NIAGARA UNIV, N.Y. – The Purple Eagles got back into the win column with a 3-0 victory over the Siena Saints on Wednesday in a crucial contest in terms of qualifying for the MAAC Tournament.
SYNOPSIS
Niagara entered Wednesday's contest one point behind Siena for the sixth and final spot in the MAAC Tournament. Goal scoring chances for both teams were sparse early, but two late first half goals shifted momentum to the Purple Eagles.
It was all Niagara in the second half as the Purple Eagles dominated possession. The Purple Eagles were rewarded for their efforts with a goal 15 minutes from the final whistle to secure the vital three points.
MOMENTS
- 16' - A fantastic save by Sabrina Locas denied Siena's Jayanna Monds.
- 22'- Kelsey Araujo had her first scoring chance saved
- 24' – Annie Ibey's effort hits the crossbar.
- 34' – Ibey cuts back her pass in the box to Hailey Bicknell, but soars her shot over the crossbar.
- 38' – Locas makes a diving save.
- 41' (Goal) – Araujo plays a tantalizing ball in the box which forces the Saints defender to stretch to clear, but knocks the ball into her own net.
- 45' (Goal) – Araujo once again plays a great ball from the right side of the pitch which eventually lands on the foot of Veda Hensel who smashes her shot into the top of the net with four seconds left on the clock.
- 47' – Florence Vailancourt has a good effort that goes just over the bar.
- 64' – Bicknell has her shot hit the crossbar.
- 67' – Locas is called on again to deny a scoring chance for the Saints.
- 69' – Bicknell nutmegs her marker in the box, but pulls her shot left of the post nearside.
- 75'(Goal) – Bicknell plays a ball thru the backline which finds Djeynaba Thiam and the freshman shoots it past the keeper.
EAGLE'S EYE ON…
- Veda Hensel scored her third goal of the season. She is now tied with Kelsey Araujo for second on the team.
- Djeynaba Thiam scored her first career goal on her only shot of the game.
- Sabrina Locas made eight saves en route to her seventh shutout of the season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- NU netted a season-high in goals with three.
- The Purple Eagles improved to 5-1-1 at home this season and 14-2-1 in their last 17 games.
- Niagara moved ahead of Siena in the standings as the teams battle for the sixth and final playoff spot. The Saints have two games remaining while NU has one.
- Niagara defeated Siena for the first time since 2015. The series was tied at 8-8-4 in the previous 20 meetings.
