Dominic Robb posted his second double-double of the season with a team-high 17 points and game-high 10 rebounds as the Purple Eagles dropped their MAAC opener to the Manhattan Jaspers, 90-80, on Saturday night.
Game Summary
The Purple Eagles looked on course for a conference opening win as they held a double-digit lead with 13 minutes remaining. However, the Jaspers flipped the script and played their best basketball of the season to stun Niagara.
Dominic Robb's putback layup with 14 minutes left gave the Purple Eagles a seemingly comfortable 57-43 lead. Over the next 10 minutes, NU managed to stave off Manhattan with key baskets.
Marvin Prochet drained a jumper to give NU a 70-63 lead and
James Towns drove to the basket for a layup for a 74-70 advantage.
Keleaf Tate's deep 3-pointer as the shot clock expired made it 78-74 with 4:05 remaining, before Manhattan reeled off a devastating run.
The Jaspers went ahead 79-78, for their first lead since it was 11-9 in the first half, as part of a 14-0 run. Manhattan closed out the final three minutes of the game on a 16-2 run.
Niagara led 45-36 at halftime after outscoring Manhattan, 27-18, in the final 10 minutes of the first half. With the score knotted at 18-18, the Purple Eagles went on a 19-7 run in six minutes as
Marcus Hammond and
Kierell Green combined for 13 points. Niagara made 6 of 11 shots from the field and went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line during the run. Niagara took its first lead of the game at 9-6 behind a 5-0 run. After briefly trailing 11-9, NU went back in front after consecutive 3-pointers by Tate to lead 15-11.
Eagle's Eye On…
- Dominic Robb notched his second double-double of the season with a team-leading 17 points and game-high 10 rebounds. Robb added to his MAAC-leading blocks total with four.
- Marvin Prochet scored 12 of his 15 points in the second half. He had three assists and team-high three steals.
- James Towns scored 13 points and dished out a game-high six assists.
- Keleaf Tate netted 13 points.
- Marcus Hammond added 10 points
Inside The Numbers
- Five Purple Eagles were in double figures scoring for the second time in the last three games.
- Niagara's 80 points and 21 made free throws are both tied for the second most this season.
