NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Four Purple Eagles scored in double figures as Niagara never trailed on its way to a 78-70 victory over rival Canisius on Wednesday night for the Purple Eagles' third win in their last four contests.

Game Summary

Despite Niagara holding a double figure lead for a large portion of the first half, the Golden Griffins and the Purple Eagles found themselves in a close endeavor in the closing minutes. While Niagara grabbed the lead early and never relinquished it for the rest of the game, Niagara's lead was cut to two points in the final minute before closing out Canisius.
 
With the score tied at 4-4 in the opening minutes, Niagara went on an 11-2 run to build a 15-6 lead. The Purple Eagles steadily increased their lead throughout the half. Marvin Prochet's jumper gave Niagara's its largest lead at 34-22 with 2:19 left in the opening stanza. The Purple Eagles closed the half on a 6-0 run for a 15-point halftime lead, 42-27.
 
Niagara continued its dominant play to start the second half, headlined by a Dominic Robb dunk to put Niagara up by a game-high 17 points, 46-29. Canisius used a run early in the second half to get close; yet Niagara extended its formidable lead, headlined by a Keleaf Tate acrobatic layup with 8:17 remaining for a 65-53 advantage. Despite a Canisius run to cut the lead to 72-70 with one minute left, Niagara ended the game as it did the first half with a 6-0 run, including four free throws by Prochet.


Eagle's Eye On…
  • Marvin Prochet had 23 points, including a perfect eight-for-eight from the free-throw line, to go along with four rebounds. Prochet now has four consecutive games with over 20 points.
  • James Towns co-led Niagara in rebounding with six boards and had a team-high five assists in addition to his 11 points.
  • Dominic Robb also had six rebounds for the Purple Eagles, along with 14 points, five rebounds and a game-high three blocks.  
  • Greg King tied his season-high in points with 10 while also grabbing three rebounds.
  • Marcus Hammond added eight points for the Purple Eagles, his most in his last eight games.

Inside The Numbers
  • The Purple Eagles have now won four of its last five contests against the Golden Griffins dating back to the start of the 2016-17 season.
  • Marvin Prochet's four consecutive games scoring over 20 points are the most for Niagara since Kahlil Dukes recorded four such games at the conclusion of the 2017-18 season. Prochet has now scored in double figures in 18 of his 19 contests this season.
  • The Purple Eagles are now 7-1 this season when leading at the half and 8-3 when scoring between 70 and 79 points this season.
  • Wednesday night's 15-point lead at the half (42-27) is Niagara's largest lead going into the break this season.
  • Niagara's six blocks are the team's most since recording six against Albany on Dec. 31.
