Purple Eagles Edged By Canisius In First Game Of MAAC Tournament

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The No. 6 Purple Eagles dropped a tight game to the No. 3 Canisius Golden Griffins in the opening game of the MAAC Tournament on Wednesday.

Game Recap
  • The Purple Eagles jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first after a homerun off the bat of the nation's leading hitter and 2018 MAAC Player of the Year, Greg Cullen.
  • In the top of the second frame, Benny Serrano singled to center field, scoring Langlois to put the Purple Eagles up, 2-0.
  • Canisius scored once in the third inning and twice in the third inning to take its first lead of the game, 3-2.
  • A sacrifice fly from Langlois in the top of the seventh scored Owen Dziados to knot the score, 3-3.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, the Griffs scored twice to take back the lead, 5-3.
  • Julian Gallup scored on an error by the Griffs' catcher in the bottom of the eighth, but Canisius held NU off for the remainder of the game and came away with the narrow 5-4 victory.

Inside the Numbers
  • Cullen, Langlois and Serrano each recorded one RBI.
  • Cullen, Dziados, Langlois, Serrano, Michael Gabriele and Trevor McCauley each had one hit.
  • Gallup had NU's only stolen base of the game.
  • Cody Eckerson started on the mound, fanning six and allowing three earned runs in 6.0 innings pitched. Tyler Howard (3-4) took the loss. He fanned one and allowed two runs in 2.0 innings pitched.
