NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara baseball team earned two exciting victories over Rider on Sunday to sweep its season series with the Broncs. Prior to the start of game one, the Purple Eagles honored their 10 graduating seniors;
Owen Dziados, Wyatt Olson,
Julian Gallup,
Nick Bernick,
James Walker,
Darian Blanks,
Trevor McCauley, Philippe Langlois,
Nigel Stearns and
Zachary Kolodziejski.
Game 1: Niagara 6, Rider 5 (9 innings)
- Rider (11-33, 6-14 MAAC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the Purple Eagles (22-24, 11-10 MAAC), scoring once in the top of the second inning and three times in the top of the fifth.
- Niagara battled its way back into the game in the bottom of the fifth frame. Joseph Tevlin singled to right center, plating McCauley. Michael Gabriele added on a two RBI single and an RBI double from Greg Cullen tied the score, 4-4.
- In the top of the sixth inning, Rider scored on a passed ball to reclaim the lead, 5-4, but NU quickly answered. In the bottom of the sixth, Olson singled to left field, scoring McCauley to once again knot the score, 5-5.
- The Purple Eagles and the Broncs went scoreless for the remainder of the seven scheduled innings of play, forcing the game into extras.
- In the top of the ninth inning, Dziados singled to right field, scoring Gallup and earning the Purple Eagles the 6-5 walk-off win.
- McCauley led Niagara with three hits and two runs scored.
- Gabriele had a team-high two RBIs.
- Gallup had a team-best two stolen bases.
- Tyler Howard (3-2) picked up the victory on the mound. He fanned three and allowed zero hits in 2.0 innings pitched.
Game 2: Niagara 20, Rider 8
- The Broncs got on the board first, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Purple Eagles absolutely dominated Rider in the bottom of the inning, scoring 12 runs and making it through the batting order almost three times. McCauley and Cullen each had three RBIs in the bottom of the first. The Purple Eagles had 11 total hits in the inning and led 12-2 going into the second frame.
- Rider scored on a wild pitch in the top of the second, but still trailed the Purple Eagles mightily, 12-3.
- In the bottom of the second, a sacrifice fly from Cullen scored Matt Zaremba. An RBI single from Dziados and an RBI double from McCauley extended NU's lead, 15-3.
- Gallup hit his fifth homerun of the season in the bottom of the fourth. A score from Cullen put NU up, 17-4, going into the fifth inning.
- RBI singles from Cullen and Nick Bernick in the bottom of the fifth kept Niagara comfortably in the lead, 19-4.
- The Purple Eagles added on one more run in the bottom of the seventh and held Rider scoreless for the remainder of the game to earn the victory and sweep the season series.
- The Purple Eagles' 20 runs are the most runs the team has scored since May 9, 2017, when they defeated Buffalo, 22-15.
- The team recorded 25 total hits, its most this season.
- Cullen led the team with five hits and went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate. He led the team in RBIs with six, which is his career-high.
- McCauley had a career-high five RBIs and recorded three hits.
- Gallup led the team in runs scored with four and had a career-high four hits.
- Zaremba had a career-best three runs scored.
- Matthew Brash started on the mound, striking out six in 4.0 innings pitched.
- Ben Erwin (5-2) earned the victory. He fanned three in 2.0 innings pitched.
