Purple Eagles Fall To The Mountaineers

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Despite an early lead, the Purple Eagles baseball team fell to West Virginia, 9-6, on Tuesday.

Game Recap
  • The Mountaineers scored in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • Niagara responded quickly in the top of the second. Julian Gallup doubled to left center field, scoring Joseph Tevlin. A single from Darian Blanks advanced Gallup to third base, and Gallup then scored on a fielding error by West Virginia's first baseman to give the Purple Eagles a 2-1 lead.
  • In the top of the third, with Cullen and Trevor McCauley on base, Battaglia went yard, giving Niagara a comfortable 5-1 lead over the Mountaineers.
  • West Virginia scored two runs off wild pitches in the bottom of the third inning to trail by only two runs, 5-3. One run from the Mountaineers in the bottom of the fourth left them trailing by only one, 5-4.
  • In the top of the fifth, Owen Dziados flied out to center field to send Cullen home and put NU back up by two runs, 6-4.
  • The Mountaineers began to pick up momentum late in the game, scoring once in the fifth inning and four times in the sixth to come away with the 9-6 victory.

Inside the Numbers
  • Cullen had a team-high three hits and two runs scored. Cullen had had five straight multi-hit games and 12 multi-hit games so far this season.
  • Battaglia led the Purple Eagles in RBIs with three.
  • Tevlin had one hit, which was a triple.
  • Alex MacKinnon (0-4) took the loss on the mound. He fanned three and allowed four earned runs in 1.2 innings pitched.
