Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Home Unbeaten Streak Remains Intact For Men’s Hockey

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara University men's hockey team extended its undefeated streak at Dwyer Arena to four straight games following a 4-2 victory over the Colgate Raiders. Brian Wilson made 37 saves in net to help the Purple Eagles (8-8-1, 7-4-1 AHA) snap a three-game losing streak.

Game Recap
  • After 10 minutes of back-and-forth play with minimal quality chances for either team, Niagara went on the penalty kill after being called for the game's first infraction. Colgate ripped off several shots – including one that clanked off the pipe – but the Purple Eagles stayed solid defensively and killed off the penalty.
  • With less than a minute remaining in the first period, Justin Kendall put Niagara up 1-0 by slipping a one-timer into the far corner pocket on a slick feed from Luke Edgerton.
  • After Colgate scored twice in the opening half of the second frame to take a 2-1 lead, Niagara pulled level on Johnny Curran's power play tally with 1:53 remaining in the period. Noah Delmas was patrolling the blue line as Colgate made a clearing attempt from the top of their crease and gloved the puck down to keep it in the zone. From his spot up top he passed it to Curran, who didn't hesitate with the shot as he ripped it home to tie it up.
  • Reed Robinson scored his sixth goal of the year 2:57 into the third period to put the Purple Eagles ahead again. Robinson carried the puck in and behind the net, then jammed home the shot from the side of the net to make it a 3-2 game.
  • Delmas took a tripping penalty three minutes later, and with the man up Colgate got several shots through to Wilson. The sophomore turned aside four shots to the delight of the cowbell-toting crowd to kill off the penalty and protect the lead.
  • Eric Cooley doubled Niagara's lead 12:58 into the third by knocking home his own blocked shot.

Beyond The Boxscore
  • With his second period assist, Delmas now has 15 points (6 G, 9 A) in his last eight outings.
  • Niagara is now 3-0-1 in their last four home games, a stretch that dates back to November 9. The Purple Eagles have outscored opponents 22-14 in those matchups.
  • Niagara's last single-season unbeaten streak of at least four home games came in their NCAA Tournament season of 2012-13, when they went 15-0-2 on the year in Dwyer. It was part of a run that didn't see the Purple Eagles lose at home between February 10, 2012 and October 5, 2013 (19-0-3), tying their own school record and matching the fifth-longest home unbeaten streak in NCAA history.

Up Next
  • Tomorrow's "Scout Day" will conclude this two-game set between the Purple Eagles and Raiders.  The puck will drop at 7 p.m., and the evening will feature special recognition for area scouts both before and during the game. Following the contest, the Niagara hockey team will remain on the ice for the third Open Skate of the season.
