NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – In front of the largest home crowd of the season, the Niagara men's hockey team suffered their first shutout loss of the season in the series finale with Colgate on Saturday night. The result gave the Purple Eagles (8-9-1, 7-4-1 AHA) a non-conference record of 1-5-0 for the year.
Game Recap
- After a relatively quiet first period, Colgate came out strong to start the second. They got several good looks at the net but missed some of their shots while Wilson saved a few as well.
- A few minutes later, the Raiders once again had a chance in close with a bouncing puck loose in the crease. Fortunately for the Purple Eagles, Zac Herrmann had his skate in the right place at the right time, as there was nothing else between the puck and the goal line.
- With the Raiders up 1-0 late in the second, tempers flared and culminated in a big scrum in front of the Niagara cage. The scene devolved into a wrestling match and put Colgate on a five-minute power play when all the penalties were squared away.
- Jon Hill was called for a trip with 10 seconds to play before the intermission, giving the Raiders a two-man advantage for 1:36 to open the third. 36 seconds in, Colgate put home their second of the night.
- With Wilson on the bench, Colgate was called for a hold and defended a 6-on-4 with 3:22 left in regulation.
Beyond The Boxscore
- Despite being called to the bench with 4:22 left to get an extra on the ice, Wilson made 39 saves to tie his season benchmark. It was just one off his career high of 40, set back on December 1, 2017 at Air Force.
- For the first time since their season-opening win against AIC on October 12, the Purple Eagles sent out 13 forwards and six defensemen rather than 12 and seven, respectively.
Up Next
- The Purple Eagles will head to RIT on Saturday, Dec. 15 before starting their winter break. Puck drop at the Gene Polisseni Center will be at 7 p.m.
