Win Streak Stopped At First Place Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – In a matchup between the top two teams in the MAAC, the Niagara University volleyball team had its four-match win streak snapped in a three-set defeat at first place Fairfield on Saturday.  
 
Match Summary
Fairfield edged Niagara in the first two sets before pulling away in the third set to win both meetings during the regular season. In the opening set, both teams exchanged points throughout as there were 14 ties. The Stags used a 6-1 run to break a 16-16 tie. After NU cut the lead to 22-20, the Stags closed the set scoring three of the last four points.
 
The lead flipped seven times and there were 12 ties in the second set. Niagara led 12-9 before the Stags went on an 8-2 run. However, the Purple Eagles went back in front with four straight points. Later in the set, consecutive kills by Draik Banks gave NU a 22-20 lead. Though, Fairfield once again closed a set strong, with a 5-1 spurt to win the set.
 
The Stags jumped out a 7-1 lead to start the third set and never trailed en their way to their 17th conference win of the season.
 
Eagle's Eye On…
  • Jaycie Roberts led Niagara with 11 kills and had 10 digs for her eighth double-double of the seaon.
  • Rylee Hunt had a match-high 22 digs for her 19th 20-plus digs match of the season.  
  • Alexis Gray and Meghan Higley both had double-digit assists. Gray had a team-high 15 assists to go along with nine digs, while Higley had 12 assists.
 
Coach's Corner
  • "Fairfield outplayed us today. We had stretches of solid play but we also had several non-productive pieces that essentially had us playing a little disjointed." - head coach Vilis Ozols
