Purple Eagles Sweep Peacocks

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara Purple Eagles cruised to a three-set win over the Saint Peter's Peacocks on Sunday for their third straight victory.

Match Summary
Niagara sprinted to an 8-2 start in the opening set behind strong serving by Meghan Higley and Jaycie Roberts. Niagara's lead eventually ballooned to 19-9 after a kill by Roberts as NU took the first set, 25-17. The Purple Eagles finished the set with a match-high .324 hitting percentage and 18 kills.

Niagara's defense prevented numerous scoring opportunities for Saint Peter's in the second set. Niagara held the Peacocks to a .022 hitting percentage and led the entire second set. The Purple Eagles dug themselves out of an early hole, trailing 7-3 after 10 points. However, Niagara scored 12 of the next 16 points to pull away for the win.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Caroline Leitch led NU in kills with 10 on a season-high .429 hitting  percentage.
  • Meghan Higley had her second double-double of the season with 27 assists, one shy of tying her career-high of 28 set on Saturday, and 11 digs.
  • Rylee Hunt led the match with 23 digs.
  • Jaycie Roberts had nine kills and 11 digs.
  • Draik Banks had eight kills on a .583 hitting percentage.  
  • Alexis Gray had 17 assists and three aces, two away from tying the program's career aces record.

Inside the number
  • Niagara is 7-2 in three-set matches this season. The seven sweeps are the most since 2011 (16).
  • NU's 6-1 home record through seven matches is its best since 2012.
  • The Purple Eagles, who are in second place in the conference, are off to their best MAAC start (9-2) since 2011.
  • Niagara has won eight straight against Saint Peter's.
