PROVO, Utah – The Purple Eagles baseball team was defeated by Brigham Young University, 15-3, in the final game of their four-game series on Saturday.
"We ran into a far superior team than us this weekend," said head coach
Rob McCoy. "They exposed our weaknesses on a macro level. We will use our failures as information to get better and will move on to Penn State."
BYU (15-1) got off to an early lead and going into the top of the fourth inning, the Cougars led Niagara (2-15), 9-0. In the top of the fourth, with
Michael Fuhrman already on base,
Christian Vangeison singled to left field, sending Fuhrman home for the Purple Eagles' first run of the game.
In the top of the seventh inning,
Tanner Kirwer doubled to left field, scoring
Mark Meisner and putting the score at 14-2, with the Cougars still in the lead. Kirwer scored Niagara's final run of the game.
Vangeison went 3-for-3 at the plate and had Niagara's only RBI. In the field, Vangeison also had a team-best 10 putouts. On the mound,
Robert Wilson (0-1) faced 12 batters in 1.1 innings pitched and took the loss.
The Purple Eagles are back in action March 18-20 with a three-game series at Penn State.
