VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Niagara baseball team fell to Pittsburgh, 5-4, in the final game of the Historic Dodgertown Classic.
In the top of the first inning, Niagara (1-3, 0-0 MAAC) got off to an early 1-0 lead over the Panthers. With
Christian Vangeison,
Greg Rodgers and
Michael Fuhrman already on base,
Taylor Hackett walked, advancing Vangeison and Rodgers and sending Fuhrman home. Niagara held Pitt (3-1, 0-0 ACC) scoreless in the first three innings.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Pitt scored two runs to take a 3-1 lead over the Purple Eagles. The Purple Eagles responded in the top of the fifth; Vangeison doubled to right center, scoring Rodgers, Fuhrman and
Tanner Kirwer, who were all already on base and Niagara took back its lead, 4-2. The Panthers closed out the fifth inning with three runs of their own, taking a one run lead over Niagara, 5-4. Both teams went scoreless through the remainder of the game.
Vangeison led Niagara with three RBIs. Fuhrman led in scoring with two of Niagara's four runs. Pitcher
Dienston Manuela faced four batters in the fifth inning and took the loss for the Purple Eagles.
The Purple Eagles head to Durham, N.C. Feb. 26-28 for a four-game series with North Carolina Central.
