Purple Eagles Fall To Siena

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara University volleyball team fell in straight sets to the Siena Saints on Sunday.

Match Summary
  • Siena held control early in the first set, getting their lead to 4-0 after a few kills by Vasovic.
  • The Purple Eagles continued to battle throughout the course of the set, in which they minimized a 20-13 lead to 22-18. After a couple kills by Matheis to get the Purple Eagles into contention, a service error would occur, giving the Saints the first set 25-21.
  • Siena continued to hold control at the start of the second set, taking a 6-1 powered by multiple kills, all assisted by Howell.
  • The Purple Eagles would progress through the set trading points back and forth with the Saints. Siena held on winning the second set 25-17.
  • Niagara took a demanding 9-0 lead to start the third set, anchored by a couple kills from Leitch, as well as some attack errors on Siena.
  • In an intense outing, that saw seven tied scores and three lead changes, the Saints would close out the set and match, with a 28-26 victory. Niagara and Siena went back and forth late in the set, from a score of 20-20, until the victor, Siena prevailed.

Purple Points
  • After winning eight straight home matches, NU has lost consecutive home matches for the first time since October 3-4, 2015
  • Nicole Matheis recorded a team-high 15 kills in the match, making it her 15th match of the season with double-digit kills. She also added a team-high 13 digs, giving her ninth double-double of the season.
  • Alexis Gray had 31 assists, making it her second consecutive match with 30 or more assists.
  • Rylee Hunt continued her streak of double-digit digs to 24, after logging in 10 digs during the match.
