NU Extends Win Streak To Five In Sweep Of Peacocks

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Niagara Purple Eagles extended their win streak to five matches with a sweep of Saint Peter's on Saturday.

Match Summary
  • The Purple Eagles defeated the Peacock of Saint Peter's in three sets in Saturday's conference match.
  • After Saint Peter's scored the opening point of the match, Niagara took the lead and never lost it the rest of the set. A kill by Nicole Mathies, followed by a set error on the Peacocks gave the Purple Eagles the first set 25-11.
  • In the second set, a kill by Alex Stone broke a 7-7 tie as the Purple Eagles ended the set on an 18-7 run, winning 25-14.
  • The Purple Eagles and Peacocks battled in the closely contested third set which featured 10 tied scores. With the score tied 20-20, a couple of service aces by Alexis Gray, followed by a couple attack errors by the Peacocks, and a kill by Matheis closed out the set and match. Niagara won 25-22, ultimately sweeping Saint Peter's 3-0.

  • The Purple Eagles have won seven of their last eight matches, including five straight.
  • Niagara's 7-3 MAAC record is the best start under head coach Vilis Ozols.
  • Niagara has won six straight against Saint Peter's.
  • NU recorded 12 aces to tie a season-high which the Purple Eagles set against Saint Peter's in the first meeting. Alexis Gray, who is eighth in the nation in aces, had a match and season-high six aces.
  • Nicole Matheis led the match with nine kills, while teammates Madison May had eight and Alex Stone seven kills.
  • Rylee Hunt added 10 digs to extend her double-digit digs streak to 21 matches.
