Last-Gasp Goal Denies Women's Soccer

BUFFALO, N.Y. – A goal in the final seconds of regulation prevented the Niagara Purple Eagles from securing their third straight win as their contest with the Buffalo Bulls ended in a 1-1 tie on Tuesday night.

"I'm extremely proud of our group," Niagara coach Peter Veltri said. "Coming on the road, playing a rival, I thought we probably played our best 90 minutes that we've played all year."

Niagara nearly went ahead in the second minute, when senior forward Haillie Price fired a high shot, but Buffalo keeper Laura Dougall was able to deflect the ball over the crossbar and out of play. Dougall came out of the box to challenge an oncoming Price in the sixth minute, with Price's attempt landing just wide of the net.

Buffalo's Celina Carrero was able to escape on a breakaway in the 15th minute, but Purple Eagles' keeper Claire Feiertag stood tall and turned away the shot with her left leg.

Sophomore defender Amelia Gulley looked to put NU on the board just before halftime as her header rattled off the post in the 42nd minute. Niagara was again denied of a goal when Price's shot in the 61st minute found the far post instead of the back of the net.

NU broke the scoreless tie in the 83rd minute, as sophomore midfielder Kelsey Lafferty was able to register her first goal as a Purple Eagle when she found the right corner of the net off a free kick by Gulley.

Niagara looked to hold the lead for the final minutes of regulation, but with just seconds left, Buffalo's Rebecca Bramble got the equalizer following a corner kick by Brianna Shingary, sending the match into overtime.

In the second overtime, NU had back-to-back opportunities for the game-winner in the 103rd minute. Sophomore midfielder Sophie Connor's shot hit the post and while junior forward Laura Ortiz was there for the rebound, but her attempt was blocked by the Bulls' defense.

"There are a lot of positives to take out of a tie," Veltri said. "As long as we continue to develop and grow, I think we will look back on this game as one of the major turning points."

Niagara keeper Claire Feiertag made a season-high nine saves in the match. Haillie Price also turned in a season-high 10 shots.

Niagara (2-1-2) returns to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 11 when it hosts St. Bonaventure at 7 p.m.
