Women’s Soccer Topped By St. Bonaventure

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Senior forward Haillie Price scored her fourth goal of the season as the Niagara Purple Eagles fell to the St. Bonaventure Bonnies on Friday night, 3-1.

"I was disappointed with how we defended tonight," head coach Peter Veltri said. "Our defending has been the strength of our team so far this year but tonight we just didn't have it."

Niagara (2-2-2) had scoring opportunities early on with Price placing two shots on net in the first three minutes, but both were stopped by St. Bonaventure keeper Christina Sarokon. The Bonnies opened the scoring against the run of play with a tally in the 12th minute. Abby Maiello took a thru ball and beat Niagara keeper Claire Feiertag at the far post for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

The Purple Eagles came out firing in the second half, with a shot on net from Amelia Gulley in the 56th minute following by two shots from Hayley Besaw in the 60th and 63rd minutes. All three attempts were turned away by Sarokon.

The Bonnies added their second goal of the match in the 69th minute, as Danielle Vis fed a pass across the net, where Jessica Scruggs was waiting for a tap in. St. Bonaventure registered its third and final goal in the 81st minute when Lauren Hill took a thru ball from Vis and buried it on the near post side. Vis finished with three assists on the night.

NU would avoid the shutout when Price found the back of the net in the 88th minute from a pass by Kori Thorne for her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Price also led the Purple Eagles in shots with five and now has a team-high 34 shots this year.

"It's a loss that we need to grow from as we prepare for the start of our conference schedule," Veltri said.

Niagara returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 13 when it travels to Philadelphia to play the Drexel Dragons at 1 p.m.
