NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara Purple Eagles secured a 2-0 win over the Siena Saints on Wednesday afternoon. Goals in each half propelled Niagara (5-3-2, 3-0-0 MAAC) to its third straight win and its first 3-0-0 start in MAAC play since the 2011 season.
"I didn't think we played our best today, but I thought we played composed and confident," head coach
Peter Veltri said.
The Purple Eagles opened the scoring in the 38th minute.
Hayley Besaw beat her marker to the touchline and whipped a cross to the back post to
Laura Ortiz who headed the ball downward and into the net. Niagara made it 2-0 in the 66th minute. Ortiz played a thru ball to
Haillie Price who played a cross infront of the net to
Emily Phillips who scored for the third straight game.
"I thought we scored two great goals tonight," Veltri added. "The combination between
Hayley Besaw and
Laura Ortiz was great to see, and Laura finish was perfect.
Haillie Price and
Emily Phillips goal was text book. It's what you practice every day and hope to see in a game".
The Niagara backline made it a quiet game for
Claire Feiertag, who had to make one save on two Siena shots en route to her third shutout of the season. Feiertag now has 15 career shutouts to surpass Ashleigh Bower's 14 as the program's all-time leader.
The Purple Eagles head back on the road to face the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m.
