NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara Purple Eagles registered their first win of the season with a dominating performance against the St. Bonaventure Bonnies on Friday night, 4-0.
Niagara opened the scoring in the seventh minute. After a shot by
Koby Sapon-Amoah was stopped and another attempt by
Bautista Pedezert was blocked, freshman forward
Alex Dimitriu was there to receive the rebound and tap it in the open net for his team-leading third goal of the season.
NU added a second tally just before halftime, as sophomore forward
Brandon Galanti took a thru ball from senior midfielder
Tim Magnusson and beat St. Bonaventure keeper Luke Iacobellis to the far post for his first goal as a Purple Eagle.
Niagara came out firing again in the second half, notching its third goal in the 54
th minute. Pedezert received a pass from
Andrew Ferguson in the box and was able to find the back of the net for his first collegiate goal.
The offensive barrage continued in the 75
th minute. Galanti's penalty kick was stopped, but the rebound came right back to him, where he struck again for his second goal of the night.
In tonight's match, the Purple Eagles doubled their goal total for the season and set new season-highs in shots (22) and shots on goal (13).
Sophomore goalkeeper
Joel Gerberich turned away all three shots on goal for his first shutout of the season.
Niagara (1-6-0) returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 20 when it stays local to play for the Big 4 Shield at the University at Buffalo at 1 p.m.
