Pedezert’s Late Goal Gives Men’s Soccer 2-2 Draw at Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. – A goal in the 87th minute by freshman forward Bautista Pedezert earned the Niagara Purple Eagles a 2-2 draw against the Buffalo Bulls on Sunday afternoon.

Buffalo found the back of the net first in the fifth minute. Bulls forward Marcus Hanson launched a long throw into the box, where Braden Scales was waiting to bury it in the right corner of the net. The Bulls added another first-half tally in the 14th minute, as Russell Cicerone fired a shot past Gerberich and into the top right corner for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Niagara's first opportunity to get on the board came in the 19th minute on a penalty kick by senior midfielder Andrew Ferguson. Ferguson's strike deflected off the hands of Buffalo keeper Joseph Kuta, then bounced off the post and remained in play, but Ferguson was unable to get his own rebound as the Bulls' defense knocked it out of play.

Freshman forward Alex Dimitriu cut the 2-0 deficit in half when he ripped a shot past Kuta and just under the crossbar in the 53rd minute for his team-leading fourth goal of the season. The forward has now scored in four of the last five games.

NU's initial push for the equalizer in the final minutes resulted in a shot by Ferguson that was stopped in the 81st minute and a shot by Dimitriu that sailed high in the 86th minute. It was Pedezert's strike that found the back of the net in the 87th minute, sending the match into overtime.

In the overtime periods, the Purple Eagles recorded four shots while holding the Bulls to just one shot.

Ferguson led the Purple Eagles with a season-high six shots and two shots on goal in the contest. Dimitriu matched a season-high with four shots on the day.

The Bulls were able to retain the Big 4 Shield following a penalty kick shootout.

Niagara (1-6-1) returns to the pitch when it opens MAAC play with an away match against the Iona Gaels on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 3 p.m.
