Softball Hosts Marist, Quinnipiac This Weekend

After almost three months on the road to start the season, the Niagara softball team will play at home this weekend starting with a doubleheader on Saturday against Marist at Noon followed by a doubleheader on Sunday versus Quinnipiac starting at 11 a.m.


Purple Eagles 101 (1-21, 1-3 MAAC)
  • The Purple Eagles picked up their first win of the season topping Fairfield, 7-1, in game two of the doubleheader on March 27.  
  • Senior Katelyn Gruarin leads the team with a .343 batting average and has two home runs.
  • Gruarin leads the Purple Eagles in all but one offensive categories, including 23 hits and eight runs scored.
  • Maldonado is second on the team with a .333 average and leads the team with eight RBIs.
  • Junior Sydney Smyers leads the team with 80.2 innings pitched, 12 games started and 41 strikeouts.
  • Sydney Smyers was named MAAC Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 10 for her performance at the Cleveland State Dome Tournament from Feb. 6-7.
  • Freshman Sarah Trifoso was named MAAC Rookie of the Week on Feb. 10 with a .300 batting average and .364 on base percentage in the first weekend of play at the CSU Dome Tournament.

On the Field: Marist Red Foxes (12-16, 2-2 MAAC)
  • Marist was tabbed as the preseason favorite to win the MAAC in 2015
  • Marist is 2-3 in its last five games.
  • The Red Foxes have taken nine of the last eleven meetings, including a MAAC Tournament win in 2013.
  • Offensively, Marist as a team hits .271 with 11 homeruns and 99 RBIs.
  • In the circle, the Red Foxes have a team ERA of 3.86 and have allowed a 140 total runs

On the Field: Quinnipiac Bobcats (6-21, 2-2 MAAC)
  • As of April 8th, the Bobcats have dropped three straight.
  • Quinnipiac split last season's series with NU.
  • The Bobcats at the plate hit .247 and have scored 88 runs this season.
  • In the circle, they have an ERA of 6.96 so far this season.
