Firenzi Goes Yard And Glowacki Pitches Into Extras Versus Bonnies

OLEAN, N.Y. – The Niagara Purple Eagles led throughout most of the offensive affair of game one, but fell 8-7 in 10 innings before the teams fought to a 1-1 tie in the game two pitcher's duel.

Game One
Anthony Firenzi turned in three RBIs and hit his third homerun of the season while Michael Fuhrman collected two RBIs and a triple in game one's 8-7 loss.

Tanner Kirwer led off the game with an infield single and was brought home on Fuhrman's triple. Thomas Rodrigues followed up with a single to center field that plated Fuhrman and gave NU the 2-0 lead. The visitors increased their lead to 3-0 when Firenzi plated his first RBI of the afternoon with a sacrifice fly that brought Nick Bernick home after a walk earlier in the frame.

After two fruitless innings, St. Bonaventure was finally able to break through against Ben Zaccagnino with an RBI single in the bottom of the third for the lone run earned against the starter. Zaccagnino pitched the first three innings, gave up one run on five hits, and struck out a pair.

Bernick led off a big fifth inning with a triple to right field and scored the first run of the inning on a misplayed fly ball. Firenzi collected his second RBI with a single to right field that scored Fuhrman and later scored a run on an infield single from Taylor Hackett to make it a 6-1 ballgame.

SBU cut into the lead with a homerun in the fifth and two runs on two hits in the bottom of the sixth, but Firenzi's homerun in the top of the seventh gave NU a 7-4 cushion. The Bonnies were able to tie the game with three runs on three hits in the last of the seventh to send the game into extras tied at 7-7. The game went three more innings before the Bonnies were able to scratch across a run in the bottom of the 10th to take the opener 8-7.

Tyler Saundry took the loss after pitching the final 2.2 innings and giving up the one run on four hits. Firenzi finished 3-for-3 with the three RBIs and a walk.

Game Two
Niagara was first on the board again in game two, this time on a Kirwer bunt after a Trevor McCauley double. The Bonnies tied the game in the bottom of the next inning to tie the game at 1-1 and end the scoring as both pitching staffs went perfect the rest of the way to a 1-1 tie.

McCauley led off the top of the third with a double to left field and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Kirwer brought him home with an infield single to give NU a 1-0 lead.

Zach Glowacki started on the mound for the Purple and White and faced just 11 batters to open the game with three shutout innings. SBU broke through with a RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the fourth that tied the game at 1-1. Glowacki didn't allow a run and only gave up two hits through his final 3.2 innings. He finished with one run on six hits with four strikeouts through 7.2 innings. Bernick pitched to and struck out one batter to end the eighth inning.

Rodrigues finished the second game 2-for-3 to lead NU at the plate. McCauley wrapped up the contest at 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Niagara is scheduled to begin the conference season this weekend with a three-game set against the Saint Peter's Peacocks.
