Kolodziejski Goes The Distance In Niagara's 6-2 Win

PHILADELPHIA – Zach Kolodziejski's complete game led the Niagara Purple Eagles to a 6-2 win over the Villanova Wildcats in the first game of the Philly Big 5 Tournament.

The freshman scattered five hits to go with two runs and five strikeouts to earn his far career collegiate victory.

On offense, Niagara (2-9) finished with 14 hits on the day, with all but one of the starting nine recording a hit in the box score. Michael Fuhrman went 3-for-4, while Nick Bernick, Daniel Procopio, Owen Dziados, and Joel Brophy all recorded two hits. Procopio and Dziados both led the team with two RBIs on the day.

"We gave a total team effort today," head coach Rob McCoy said. "The effort was high, the energy was high, and we competed our tails off."

The Purple Eagles opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first. With two outs, Fuhrman singled up the middle before stealing second. Procopio advanced Fuhrman to third with a single to give the Purple Eagles runners on the corners and Anthony Firenzi followed with a single up the middle to knock in Fuhrman. Firenzi then stole second to give Niagara runners on second and third, which allowed Dziados to bring both home with a single and give the Purple Eagles a 3-0 lead after the half-inning.

The Wildcats (6-9) answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first to bring the score to 3-2. Both teams were held scoreless over the next four innings.

In the top of the sixth, Dziados reached on a walk with one out. After Tyler Lau singled to left, moving Dziados to second, a wild pitch allowed both players to move up, giving the Purple Eagles runners on second and third with one out. Brophy followed with a single to left field to plate Lau and give Niagara a 4-2 lead.

"I'm proud of how we've responded during such a long road trip," said McCoy. "Everyone is on board and giving their best effort to get better."

The following inning saw Bernick single to center field and Fuhrman reach on a bunt single to put runners on with one out. Procopio doubled to left center to bring both of them around to score to give NU its final 6-2 lead.

The Purple Eagles are back on the field tomorrow when they take on the La Salle Explorers with the first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m. You can follow all the action with Live Stats.
