Baseball Loses Weekend Opener To George Washington

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Niagara Purple Eagles opened an early lead but ultimately fell to the George Washington 16-7 on Friday afternoon.

The Purple Eagles (0-3) opened the game with a run in the top of the first inning after Greg Rodgers doubled in Thomas Rodrigues, who reached after being hit by a pitch. GWU tied it up with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame.

Niagara brought three runners home in the top of the second to go up 4-1. With two out, Geoff Seto singled through the left side. Anthony Firenzi reached on a walk and both came around on a Rodrigues triple to right center. Rodrigues later came around to score on an error by the George Washington shortstop. GWU again tied it up with three runs of their own in the bottom of the second.

"Again we saw some good things," head coach Rob McCoy said. "We showed glimpses of really good baseball, however we need to put it all together. Once that happens, we are going to be a solid club."

The Purples Eagles went scoreless over the next four innings, while the Colonials brought home four runners to go up 8-4 after the sixth inning.

Niagara tried to mount a comeback with three runs in the seventh inning. Rodrigues again reached base with a single to right field. Michael Fuhrman, the next batter up, was hit by a pitch to give the Purple Eagles runners on first and second with no outs.

Rodgers singled to left center, which allowed Rodrigues to come around and score. Daniel Procopio knocked Fuhrman in with a groundball to the GWU second baseman, followed by Hayden Coll sending a double to center field, bringing around Rodgers and pulling the Purple Eagles within one run, 8-7, after 6.5 innings.

The Colonials plated four runners in both the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings to build its final 16-7 lead.

Freshman Zach Kolodziejski went five innings and took the loss for Niagara. Thomas Rodrigues led the way on offense going 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs.
