LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Niagara women's soccer team fell 1-0 to the Rider Broncs in a battle of teams tied for third place on Wednesday to drop its first conference road game of the season.
"We outshot and outplayed our opponent today, but we lost," head coach
Peter Veltri said. "We made one mistake and unfortunately, we paid for it. We need to put this behind us and start to focus on the next game."
The Purple Eagles (6-5-2, 4-2-0 MAAC) created more chances and outshot Rider (8-5-0, 5-2-0 MAAC) 14-4, including holding a 5-1 advantage in the second half.
The lone goal of the game came in the 19th minute when Rider's Meghan McCabe headed home a corner kick for her fourth goal of the season. Niagara came close to equalizing in a 10-second span in the 62nd minute with attempts by
Assia Sidhoum and
Courtney Betts. Niagara's last scoring opportunity came in the 84th minute.
Emily Phillips played a cross from the left into the box and
Laura Ortiz's header to the far post went narrowly wide.
The Purple Eagles will face the Saint Peter's Peacocks on Saturday at 1 p.m.
