BUFFALO, NY – Coming back from Christmas break, the Niagara men's and women's swimming and diving teams were swept by the Buffalo Bulls on Saturday, Jan. 10 at the Alumni Arena Natatorium. The men's team fell 140.5-81.5 while the women's team dropped a 147.5-88.5 decision.
Sophomore
Shawn Warner collected a second-place finish in the 200 individual medley (155.81) and tied third in the 100 butterfly (53.18). Several other Purple Eagles placed during the afternoon's meet including
Shane Baxter, who took second in the 100 backstroke (51.77),
Edgar Melchor took third in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.55) and
Alexander Pizzo placed third in the 500 freestyle (5:09.88). Pizzo also notched third in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:58.20
The men's team also took second place in the 200 freestyle relay as
James Crumm,
Andrew Wilson,
Jason Ellis and Pizzo combined for a finishing time of 1:35.00. Niagara's team of Baxter, Melchor, Warner and
Eric Ebert took third place in the 200 medley relay (1:38.18).
On the women's side,
Emily York took third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 56.19 while
Margaret Byrne took third in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.74).
Sydney Kligys also tied in third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.82 for the Purple Eagles.
The women saw a first-place finish as
Emily Deck secured first in the three meter dive, totaling 292.13 points.
The men's and women's teams will take a short drive to Buffalo, N.Y. to take on cross-town rival Canisius on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 1 p.m.
