Amanda Sedore's career-best .368 hitting percentage and match-high 17 kills were not enough as the Purple Eagles fell in four sets to the Rider Broncs, 27-25, 25-15, 21-25, 25-23 , on Saturday afternoon.
"I thought the team played well at times today, but gave up runs of momentum," said head coach Vilis Ozols. "There were times that are inexperienced showed, but I also thought there were great examples of individual leadership at key times. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to carry us through and win this match."
Sedore led the team in kills for the second straight match while only committing three errors on 38 attacks.
Alex Stone joined Sedore in double-digit kills with 11. Freshmen
Alexis Gray and
Rylee Hunt each led the match with 39 assists and 15 digs, respectively. Gray also added 12 digs for her third double-double of the season.
In the opening set, the Purple Eagles (4-10, 0-3 MAAC) used an 8-2 run to take a 21-18 lead. A kill by
Nicole Matheis gave Niagara a chance to serve out the set leading 24-22, but Rider (7-7, 2-0 MAAC) scored three straight points to take a 25-24 lead. After a kill by
Logan Rae to tie the match at 25-25, consecutive kills by the Broncs sealed the first set win. NU found itself in an early deficit in the second set as the Broncs took the second set, 25-15.
After losing the first two sets, Niagara had an efficient performance to win the third set. The Purple Eagles hit a match-best .385 and had 13 kills with six coming from Sedore. With the set tied at 19-19, Niagara scored six of the next eight points to win the set.
The fourth set was tightly contested as NU tried to force the deciding set. A kill by Matheis tied the match at 22-22 and an attacking error by Rider led to a 23-22 NU lead. However, the Broncs notched three straight kills to finish the match.
Niagara is back on the court tomorrow to face Saint Peter's at 1 p.m.
