NU Pockets 1-0 Victory Over RMU in Final Non-Conference Game

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – An early second-half goal from senior Haillie Price was enough to secure the Niagara women's soccer team a 1-0 victory against Robert Morris on Thursday in the Purple Eagles final non-league game of the season.

After the a scoreless first half the Purple Eagles wasted no time in creating an opportunity for themselves in the second stanza as Price pocketed goal number three of the season at the 49th minute.  Sophomore Shawnique Samuels dished a short feed to Price outside the box who saw her cross deflect off a Robert Morris defender into the top left corner.

Junior goalkeeper Claire Feiertag stopped four Robert Morris shots for her second consecutive blank slate and fourth overall, while her counterpart senior Becky Schoenecker stopped one NU attempt on net.

The victory pushes the Purple Eagles to 4-1-2 heading into Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play, while the defeat dropped the Colonials to 1-6-1.

Opportunities were limited in the opening 45 minutes of play, with Niagara holding a slim 6-4 advantage.  Freshman Eva Bachmann and sophomore Naomi Giovino registered the half's two best opportunities.  The first scoring chance came 26 minutes into the game as senior Catherine Meyer chipped a cross into the box to an open Bachman, but her one-timer flew wide.  Ten minutes later, Giovino followed that with a laser from outside the 18-yard box that sailed just over the goal.

After Niagara's early second-half tally, the physical play began to pick up as both squads traded fouls and yellow cards.  With just over 10 minutes remaining in the contest, the Colonials' had several potential game-tying shots on their foot including a shot from Lauren Pietrowski that was bobbled by Feiertag, but the netminder made a diving save to prevent overtime.

Niagara and RMU wrapped up the afternoon with 11 shots each.  The teams totaled 22 fouls over 90 minutes of play with the Colonials holding a 13-9 advantage.

Niagara kick start conference play on Sunday, Sept. 21 when the Purple Eagles travel to Riverdale, N.Y. to take on the Manhattan Jaspers.  The contest is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start.
