Box Score 2 HAMDEN, Conn. – The Niagara Purple Eagles won their third straight game with a 2-0 victory over the Quinnipiac Bobcats in game one of the doubleheader before having their rally fall short in a 6-4 defeat in game two on Saturday.
Niagara 2, Quinnipiac 0Jennifer Sansano recorded her fourth shutout of the season en route to her 11th win of the season as Niagara won game one, 2-0. Sansano tied her career-best in wins with 11, which was set last season, which are tied for fifth most in program history. Sansano struck out seven batters as she moved into third all-time in career strikeouts with 330.
After allowing one hit in the first and second inning, Sansano held the Bobcats (11-34, 6-12 MAAC) hitless for the remainder of the game.
The offense only needed one run, which came in the opening inning. A
Chanelle Ward single, a
Bridget Hogan double and an
Aileen Hinton walk loaded the bases for the Purple Eagles before
Desarae Maldonado walked to score Ward. The Purple Eagles (17-29, 7-11 MAAC) scored their second run in the sixth inning when
Katelyn Gruarin scored
Miranda Ortega from third.
Niagara 4, Quinnipiac 6Niagara fell in game two, but not without putting in a late run. Trailing 6-1 entering the final inning, the Purple Eagles scored three runs with two outs and had the bases loaded when the final out occurred.
Ally Gay and Gruarin each scored when Hogan reached on an error by the second baseman. The next two batters walked to load the bases, and Amanda Werth was also walked to score another run as the lead was cut to 6-4. However,
Rachel Ziarnowski popped up to end the game.
Niagara wraps up the season with a doubleheader at Siena starting at Noon.
