AMHERST, N.Y. – The Niagara Purple Eagles staved off a last inning rally to take game one of the doubleheader, 9-8, before falling in a shorten game two, 6-3, on Wednesday.

Niagara 9, Buffalo 8
Niagara (11-16) broke a five-game losing streak to UB (17-16) in game one. The last win in the series against the Bulls was game one of a doubleheader on April 21, 2010 at Nan Harvey Field.

Niagara got on the scoreboard first in the second inning. Ambur Farmer hit a two-run homer over the left field wall, her second consecutive game with a home run, to give the Purple Eagles a 2-0 lead. UB got one run back in the bottom of the inning to cut NU lead in half.

The Purple Eagles tact on four runs in the third. With the bases loaded, Desarae Maldonado singled through the right side to score one run. Three of the next four batters would be walked by UB's Heather Ryder as Niagara led 6-1 heading into the bottom of the third. After UB scored one run on a bases loaded walk in the third, a two-run home run by Sammi Gallardo in the fourth inning trimmed Niagara's lead to 6-4.

NU increased its lead to 9-4 in the sixth inning all on two outs. Aileen Hinton roped a double to left centerfield to score two Purple Eagles, and Hinton later scored on a Maldonado double to left field. UB led off its half of the inning with a solo homer.

In the seventh inning, a triple by Tori Pettine scored two Bulls to cut the lead to 9-7. Pettine later scored on a fielder's choice to score from third. However, NU recorded the last out of the game with a lined out to third.

Kim Bryson collected her second win of the season while going four innings. Sydney Smyers earned the save for her first of the season.

Niagara 3, Buffalo 6

Game two of the doubleheader only went five innings due to darkness.

UB pushed home four runs in the opening stanza with two runs coming on a triple by Holly Luciano.

In the second inning, Sarah March notched her second hit of the season with a booming two-run home run to centerfield to cut UB's lead in half. The Bulls added to their lead with one run in both the second and third innings, before Niagara scored one run in the fifth in part to heads up base running by Brittany Richberg.

The Purple Eagles remain on the road this weekend with Saint Peter's on Saturday and Manhattan on Sunday.
